Cinderella
My husband and I recently saw touring production of Cinderella. We both enjoyed the show and it will forever stick in our minds as another example of an unforeseen heartbreak over Isabella's death.
The audience was crowded with little girls in princess gowns, grandmothers with their granddaughters, families, and tiaras. We never planned on calling Isabella "our little princess," but we were looking forward to introducing her to the magic of make believe, fairy tales, and theater shows.
For most of the production we were able to get caught up in the music, costumes, and show. However, anguish comes sneaking in, even in the most unexpected places. As Cinderella is in a splendid sparkling white gown just about the leave for the ball, the fairy godmother says, "Now, Go! Go forth in the name of every girl who has ever wanted to attend a royal ball in a beautiful dress! In the name of every girl who's ever wanted to change the world she lived in, go with the promise of possibility!"
These lines immediately brought my husband to tears that completely obscured his vision. We clutched each others' hands with renewed awareness of the hopes we lost with Isabella's death. We wanted our daughter to have dreams, whether of attending a royal ball in a beautiful dress, walking on the moon, raising her own family, or of inventing the means to make teleportation a reality. We had pictured encouraging our daughter to have impossible dreams that could change the world she lived in. Until she died, her future was full of the promise of possibility. Instead, we did not need a babysitter to attend Cinderella.
